Lineations

After 16 years of living and working in London, I moved back to Sydney to be close to family and to study for a Master of Fine Art degree.

I returned to London for this exhibition of my most recent series of abstract landscapes. Many of these paintings have imagery based on European landscape, especially places that were significantly memorable to me. In the more recent paintings, however, a somewhat Australian flavour has appeared but my work is based less on recollections of a particular landscape and more on the feelings that a particular place holds in the memory. They attempt to evoke a moment in time and capture the memories that linger long afterwards. As the memories fade and become more difficult to recall clearly, so the paintings become more fragmented and abstract.

The past few years of my life have been tinged with grief and sadness and I have spent a lot of time reflecting. The paintings have provided a vehicle enabling me to journey on a pathway of discovery through the layers of memory, unravelling the strands and strengthening the links. And yet, beyond the layers of memory, the paintings give the past meaning and hint at the promise of a brighter future.
