Welcome to the web site of artist, Jill Dunkerton.
This web site documents most of Jill’s work since 2003.
Jill Dunkerton is a well-known and widely collected Sydney artist, who divides her time between Bondi Beach and the Cotswolds, England. Jill’s love of both countries – and their natural beauty – is conveyed unequivocally in her work.
Her abstract landscape paintings reflect her deep relationship with the places that have shaped her life. Her use of colour helps convey the emotional metaphors and reflections that Jill finds in each landscape.
Jill’s work tells a poignant story of the artist’s own journey and her experiences of personal loss and grief. But there is a strong component of reflection. She conveys a sense of timelessness, that hints at darker memories but also a brighter future.
Writing in “Artwise Contemporary 2”, Glenis Israel, explained there was an autobiographical element to Jill’s paintings. “They may have their origins in her emotional journey but they also compel the viewer into their own emotional response as well as to intellectualise the imagery in search of meaning, to make our own sense of the world.” GI
After completing a degree in Physiotherapy in Sydney, Jill travelled and worked in Europe, before settling in London, where she undertook a Foundation course at Chelsea and then completed a Fine Art (Honours) degree at Central St Martin’s School of Fine Art.
Jill returned to Australia after the premature death of her husband. She completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at COFA (College of Fine Arts, NSW University) and raised her two children in Bondi. She maintains an English connection with frequent visits.
Jill has had many solo and joint exhibitions in Sydney and London and been a finalist in numerous art awards including First Prize in the Broadway Arts Festival UK, and a recent finalist in the Mosman Art Prize, Hawkesbury Art Prize, Waverley Art, and 9×5 Landscape Prize.
Jill has paintings in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, France, Sweden, the USA and the UK.
